Default Mac syncing issues

anyone have any advice for syncing two macs together? my 7 yr old Imac, has firefox 3.2.65 and I am trying to sync the preferences and bookmarks to our brand spanking new imac? our old imac wont update firefox and when we sync the preferences and files, the file is not recognized by our new mac (probably because its the old firefox) the easiest way I imagine is to back up everything on an external drive, but any other suggestions would be great, thanks
